BIG ANIMAL ART & DESIGN

CUTOUT FILTER, CLONE STAMP TOOL, BLEND MODES

Try this one – search elephant, select large file in TOOLS area of your browser in IMAGES.

• DUPLICATE elephant layer. DRAG and DROP elephant layer onto CREATE NEW LAYER TAB, bottom right in layer window – or OPTION/SHIFT (mac) and DRAG LAYER just down until you see the black line and release cursor.

• Turn elephant into grey scale. ADJUSTMENT/BLACK & WHITE.

• MENU/FILTER/FILTER GALLERY – select CUTOUT

• Set CUTOUT to 8, 6, 1 turning elephant into a limited amount of VALUES and SHAPES.

• Use MAGIC WAND TOOL, set TOLERANCE to 16, uncheck CONTIGOUS.

• COPY and PASTE – the darkest shapes will be copied into a new layer.

• Return to BLACK and WHITE LAYER, SELECT next value of grey. COPY and PASTE.

• REPEAT until you have 5 layers of elephant selections.

• LOCK each new elephant layer. Found top left of LAYER WINDOW. Once LOCKED a LOCK will appear on the right side of each layer. You can rearrange layers if needed, I placed them darkest on the bottom to lighter on top.

• SEARCH in browser for COOL TEXTURES. Large, DOWNLOAD 1/2 dozen.

• OPEN a Texture. SELECT CLONE STAMP TOOL (S). Place cursor over texture, HOLD down OPTION key and notice how cursor changes. Click on mouse to set CLONE STAMP.

• Return to elephant. Select a layer (which is locked).

•UNCHECK ALIGNED (not shown here) and paint in entire area using CLONE. You may need to pick up your cursor and begin again to get other areas.

• Repeat this process on each layer. OPEN Texture, use clone tool, activate it on the new texture. RETURN to elephant, select another layer, and fill in.

• SAVE

• SAVE JPGS often, whenever you find something interesting.

• After each value layer has been filled with a texture.

• SELECT all of these layers and MERGE LAYERS.

• Now use BLEND MODES and OPACITY. Try each BLEND MODE out, see what they do.

• Set to OVERLAY and  OPACITY to 40%

• TURN OFF Black & White LAYER – showing original photo of elephant.

• OPEN new Texture. COPY and PASTE into elephant layer.

• If Texture is too large, ZOOM out and FREE TRANSFORM (T), hold SHIFT key and resize image to fit.

• We will now place a texture around the elephant.

• Activate original elephant layer and SELECT the white (negative space) using the MAGIC WAND TOOL.

• INVERSE this SELECTION and ACTIVATE the new Texture layer and hit DELETE.

• SAVE

• Explore Photoshop, see what else you can do.

• I DUPLICATED my elephant pattern layer and used FIND EDGES in FILTERS, changed OPACITY.

• I also added another texture on top of everything, and threw in a BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT LAYER.

• And finally I created a rectangle SELECTION by the feet and DELETE the Texture Layer.
