Chabot Photoshop Assignment
Part ONE: Rule of Thirds
• Open TWO (2) new files
1) 1200 x 900 pixel (horizontal/landscape)
2) 900 x 1200 pixel (vertical/portrait)
• Create new layer (remember to not work on background layer)
• Select LINE tool (U)
• Set weight to 3
• Create diagonal lines from both corners
• Activate RULER – command R
• Use math to determine center line – or
• Create GUIDE by clicking in the Ruler and drag across or down to create a new guide (blue line)
TURN OFF & ON GUIDES – “Command:”
• Use LINE tool and create star shape
• SAVE as PSD (photoshop file) ruleofthirds_horizontal_lastname.psd
• add more GUIDES if needed
• Create vertical or horizontal LINES hold down SHIFT KEY while creating lines by moving your cursor
PART 2 – ABSTRACT SHAPES
• Select BACKGROUND layer and use COMMAND I to INVERT image turning white background into black
• Return to red line layer
• Use MENU – SELECT ALL (command A)
• MENU – EDIT – STROKE – 3 px – INSIDE
• use MAGIC WAND (W)
• SELECT shapes on red line layer
• Create NEW LAYER
• Change COLOR
• EDIT/FILL/Foreground color will fill shapes selected.
• Use SELECTION MARQUEE TOOLS (M) to create circles, ovals, squares, rectangles
• Create NEW LAYERS for each shape
• Fill shapes with colors
• Change OPACITY of layers (select “V” move tool and change opacity by then using 1-10 number keys)
• Move shapes around, FEEL it, use your INTUITION, place them using the Rule of Thirds and see what you get.
• Create something beautiful, explore, get to know Photoshop
• Work on second file – do the same things, learn, explore
• Save: ruleofthirds_vertical_lastname.psd
• Export each file: SAVE as COPY – change PSD to JPEG, high 8 setting
